Special Feature: Processing Patterns by Cutting

Writer's picture: Mr. SugitaMr. Sugita

Thanks for dropping by! It's Head of Operations, Mr. Sugita here.

Because of our focus on prototyping, we often receive inquiries like, "Is it even possible to process this idea I have?"

In order to answer this, we wanted to try some new techniques to see if we could achieve similar outcomes. Let's look at traditional knurling/stamping versus making similar patterns by cutting.

Commercially produced patterned acrylic boards are different. When we use a cutter to pattern, we have more options for materials and thickness. In turn, we can find cost savings when making individual items.

The Test

The top left (1) piece is the commercial example, the right piece (2) was done with an in-house cutter. There is a clear difference in the patterns.

The Process

We made our own cutter based on the commercial cutter.

The Outcome

Here is the final pattern!

With this project, hand processing and machining are blended together to create a flexible style for bringing designs to life. Every day we challenge ourselves to get creative with different processing methods.

Our wide array of machines, tools, and computer programs inspire confidence in how we work for you. We have over 30 machines on our factory floor, and a team of seasoned veterans using a wide array of precision tools to give you the best finished product. No design? No problem. We have a crew for that, too. Just one piece is where we start. No minimum order means no limit to what we'll make for you. With 40 years of experience, there's a good chance we've done it, and if not, we know someone who knows someone.

Our capabilities include cast molding, plating, stereolithography, machining & turning, painting, hardening, alumite, electrical discharge, cutting, bending, welding, and more. Materials we work with are stainless steel, aluminium (or aluminum, depending on where you're from) titanium, copper, nickel, iron, sheet metal, ABS, POM, Nylon, PC, Acrylic, PE, UPE, Bakelite, Unilite, PPS, PFA, PEEK, PI, PBT, PSUJ, PES, PEI, PA, PPE and others. Don't see it here? Maybe we can give it a shot.

Your prototype starts as a design at our inbox, travels to our CAD room for careful analysis, and then proceeds to the ideal machine for creation. Once completed, your piece moves to hand-finishing, then each item is painstakingly inspected to ensure the final pieces meet the requirements you've laid out. Once they pass the test, each piece is meticulously packed for maximum protection for its journey to you. We have full confidence you'll be over the moon when your order arrives.
